COOKING WITH CARE

Foodborne illnesses are extremely dangerous to everyone but especially to the elderly. Since older adults have weakened immune systems, they get sicker from bacterial infections and cannot recover as quickly. Follow these tips to ensure that the food you serve is safe:

  • Periodically check the temperatures of the refrigerator and freezer to make sure they are working properly—fridge should be 40° F and freezer should be 0° F
  • Place meat, poultry and seafood directly into the refrigerator or freezer upon arrival, and wrap foods tightly before placing them in the freezer

If you cannot remember when an item was placed in the refrigerator or freezer, throw it out to be safe!
